Rebecca Chappell was raised in Winnsboro, SC. She attended and graduated from Winnsboro High School. She attended and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science from Bennett College in Greensboro, NC. Her first job upon graduating from college was as a Computer Programmer at Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Generating Station in Jenkinsville, SC. At the time, her goals and aspiration were to design and build robots via Artificial Intelligence. The course of Rebecca’s career changed when she began working in a local law office. She became intrigued with the law. She became aware of the blatant injustice which plagues this country. It was this moment, she knew she wanted to be a litigator. She knew she wanted to be a voice for the many who feel hopeless. Being the voice for others is nothing new for Rebecca. As the daughter of deaf parents and fluent in American Sign Language, she would advocate for her parents in various circumstances and situations. So the path leading to criminal defense work seemed natural. She attended North Carolina Central University-School of Law where she was a member of the Trail Advocacy Board, a member of the Moot Court Board and the 3L class secretary. Within weeks of receiving her Juris Doctor, Rebecca had her first jury trial with the Law Office of James E. Rogers, P.A. She has litigated many jury and bench trials for over 20 years with the Durham County Public Defender’s Office. Rebecca is an aggressive litigator but sympathetic to her clients and their situation. She takes a holistic approach in dealing with her clients. She knows her clients are more than someone who has a charge. She is willing to be the voice for her clients so everyone will also know, her clients are more than the pending charge/offense.
