Sex Offender Arrested After Warned to Leave Legion Baseball World Series

A registered sex offender was warned to leave the American Legion World Series at Keeter Stadium in Shelby, but he returned any way. The man was arrested by Shelby law enforcement officers upon his return.

The 36-year-old man is a registered sex offender for sex offense convictions in 1999 and 2000. In 1999, the man was convicted of a felony crime against nature and felony indecent liberties with a child. He was again convicted in 2000 of felony second-degree sexual offense, according to the North Carolina Department of Correction. The man was released from prison in 2010.

The baseball tournament, the American Legion World Series, was held at Keeter Stadium over the weekend. The man was spotted prior to entering the stadium and was warned by police to leave and not return. The man ignored the warning, however, and returned on the school property again later in the day. He was arrested and charged with being a sex offender on child premises.

Registered sex offenders have limited rights to enter buildings, sporting events and other recreational activities where children are present. Sex offenders also may soon face restrictions on social media use. The goal of these restrictions is to prevent recidivism and limit contact with a vulnerable children.
