Operation Bad Candy Results in Arrests and Drug Charges

In an operation called Bad Candy, law enforcement agencies in Brunswick County have been searching for individuals who allegedly violated the North Carolina Controlled Substance Act. Currently, the agencies are searching for more than 50 suspects for alleged drug crimes.

According to a news release from the Brunswick County Sherriff's Office, the operation has resulted in the arrests of 27 suspects with a total of 88 controlled-substance-related charges. Sgt. April Stanley said that 19 were controlled-substance charges because the individuals had narcotics, paraphernalia or firearms on their person at the time of their arrest.

Two .22 caliber rifles and a .25 caliber handgun were seized during the arrests. Also, a 1998 Crown Victoria and a 1992 Chevrolet Cheyenne truck were seized from the homes of individuals who were arrested.

During the operation, Drug Enforcement Agents issued and executed two search warrants at two residences. Police seized about 60 grams of marijuana, 11 grams of cocaine and about $1,600 from a residence on Burnice Lane in Bolivia.

Stanley said that operation Bad Candy is the fifth drug roundup since Sherriff John Ingram took office. Over the past six months, the Brunswick County Sherriff's Office Drug Enforcement Unit has been working with the Ocean Isle Police Department to conduct multiple drug-related investigations in Brunswick County.

According to Stanley, the collaboration between the agencies has produced vehicle stops, home searches and multiple controlled purchases. Further, the agencies have seized various controlled substances, including cocaine, marijuana, prescription medications and drug paraphernalia.

The Bad Candy operation is focused on prescription pill rings and street level-to-mid level drug dealers in Brunswick County.
