Two Charged in Connection with North Carolina Sex Trafficking

A man and a woman from Georgia were charged in May with sex trafficking and other sex crimes related to their involvement in a prostitution ring. The pair allegedly enslaved women in sex acts for money in Atlanta, other areas of Georgia and in North Carolina.

Lawsuit Alleges the Failure to Provide Interpreters in North Carolina Is Illegal

Three advocacy groups have filed a lawsuit against North Carolina courts alleging that the court system is acting illegally by failing to provide interpreters for non-English speaking individuals. The Latin American Coalition, Muslim American Society and Vietnamese Society have jointly filed the lawsuit, requesting that the U.S. Department of Justice investigate the alleged discrimination.

Repeat Offender Picked Up on Suspicion of Sixth DWI in Gaston County

A habitual offender was picked up by police for the sixth time on suspicion of driving while intoxicated (DWI). Police reported that the man's blood alcohol content (BAC) level was .20, which is more than twice the legal limit in North Carolina.

Raleigh Shooting at Apartment Complex Raises Safety Concerns

Three people were arrested for allegedly breaking into a Raleigh apartment complex and shooting a man in the home invasion. Two men and one woman were charged with various charges related to the incident, including robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, firing a weapon inside a dwelling, assault, second degree kidnapping, and conspiracy.

Sex Offenders Are Expected to Challenge Law Against Social Networking Site Use

Several men charged with violating a North Carolina law that prohibits sex offenders from using social networking sites are expected to appeal their conviction under the statute. While the law was signed into effect in 2008, only 18 were charged under the law in 2009 and 75 were charged in 2010.

Repeat Offender Gets Life in Prison for Marijuana Charges

A man who was sentenced to probation only after each of his three marijuana convictions in New Orleans got quite a shock after moving to a new town - he was sentenced to life in prison after his fourth drug possession charge. The man was convicted of attempting to possess and distribute marijuana for the fourth time and was sentenced under Louisiana's repeat-offender law.

MTV Teen Mom Performs Community Service After Drug Charges

An MTV "Teen Mom" reality television star worked her community service hours by picking up trash along a North Carolina highway after pleading guilty to misdemeanor drug charge in late April. The reality show mom has been arrest twice in the past six months - once for the drug charge and once for breaking and entering and assault.

Asheville Man Faces Insurance Fraud Charges

A local Asheville developer who has been under intense scrutiny for his recent failed Seven Falls development now faces white collar crime charges. The man has been charged with three counts of insurance fraud and one count of obtaining property by false pretenses charges.
