Sexting Troublesome for Members of the Military

Sexting or "sex texting" is a growing trend as accessibility to technology such as phones and computers increases for members of the military. Depending on the facts of the situation, there can be serious military and criminal consequences to illicit texting. It is important to understand the ramifications of sexting before engaging in the activity.

One's military career and reputation can be quickly tarnished with seemingly harmless sexual photos or text messages. While sexting is generally legal in North Carolina by two consenting adults individuals, there are types of text messages that are illegal.

The following types of inappropriate messages or pictures can result in criminal charges:

  • Underage or minor-involved sexting
  • Harassing sexting
  • Lewd sexting

In many situations for members of the military, there are policies against sexual fraternization. Violating these rules with explicit texts, pictures or emails is often as serious as an actual sexual relationship. Records of sexting via phone or email are also relatively easy to track down, which makes it simple to demonstrate illegal or inappropriate conduct.

All it takes is one mistake to ruin a career of hard work. If you've been charged in connection with sexting or other technology-based crime, contact a local North Carolina criminal defense lawyer to fight for your rights.
