When you hear about a person being released from prison after serving only half of a their sentence, that person was not in the federal prison system. Often, state prisons are much more lenient on the actual sentence that must be served before an inmate can be released early to his or her family.

Major Drug Trafficking Ring Busted Bus Cabarrus County

Reportedly by using furniture trucks, five people have been charged with trafficking more than two tons of marijuana to Concord. The five were linked by investigators to a Mexican drug ring. The co-conspirators used warehouses at the final destination for the drugs to complete the mass shipping of weed up I-85, just north of Charlotte.

Female Convicted of Raping Two Male Children In Catawba County

A 48-year-old Newton woman has been sentenced to at least 300 months in prison and must register as a sex offender for the rest of her life after being convicted of two counts of first degree rape of a child. Donna Stewart was arrested after a sex crimes investigation triggered by one of the children's mothers who read a conversation her son had about the rape over Facebook.

Under Investigation For Financial Crimes? Feds May Be Listening

Wiretaps aren't just being used to investigate violent crimes, organized crime and drug offenses anymore. Consider the recent insider trading case of Raj Rajaratnam of the Galleon Group: an investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission over the course of two or three years did not yield enough information to hold Rajaratnam accountable for insider trading, however, 2000 recordings collected over a year-long wiretap of his cell revealed an extensive network of insider trading that could finally be prosecuted.

A teenage couple in Florida is making news because of their ages: one is 18 and the other is 14. The 18-year-old, Kaitlyn Hunt is facing criminal sex offense charges of lewd and lascivious assault on a minor based on a sexual relationship she had with a 14-year-old classmate. Hunt is facing registration as a sex offender if convicted of the underage sex crime.

Compassionate Release For Inmates Of Federal Prisons

A section of the Sentencing Reform Act of 1984 allows the sentence of a federal inmate to be reduced by a judge for "compelling reasons." This section has been used to justify early release of inmates who are terminally ill - typically within six to twelve months of the end of life.

Drunk Driving Limits May Change From .08 To .05

More people throughout North Carolina may find themselves facing driving while impaired charges if the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has its way. The federal agency just announced its recommendation that the limit for blood alcohol content be lowered from .08 to .05, an almost 35 percent drop in the amount of alcohol allowed in a person's system before he or she is considered legally impaired.

Collettsville School Secretary Charged With Embezzlement

The Caldwell County Sheriff's office is estimating that former school secretary Emily Hawkins embezzled at least $40,000 from the Collettsville school where she worked. The investigation into the alleged employee theft began after local law enforcement received tips about suspicious purchases that Hawkins had made.

Speeding Ticket Ends In Drug Charge Arrest

A traffic stop in Iredell County turned into a major drug bust when police pulled 22-year-old James Rossi over for speeding on Interstate 77. The deputies who stopped Rossi claimed to have smelled marijuana coming from the truck during the traffic stop and completed a search of the vehicle.

Arrest Made In Alleged Sex Assault On NC State Campus

A 21-year-old Garner man was arrested on alleged sex offenses reported on the North Carolina State University campus. According to reports, an NC State student reported that she was sexually assaulted outside the D.H. Hill Library early in the morning in late April.

Federal Sex Crimes Conviction Nets 432 Month Prison Sentence

A plea of guilty to transportation of child pornography along with a criminal history that included two convictions on state sex crimes netted a 432 month prison sentence on federal child sex crimes for a 41-year-old Cantler man. Lawrence Hutson will also face lifetime registration as a sex offender once released as well as supervised release.

Selling U.S. Weapons On eBay Lands Henderson Man In Prison

The former firearms manager at North Carolina Law Enforcement Support Service (LESS) may face up to 15 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to stealing weapons from the United States. LESS loans surplus equipment from the Department of Defense to state and local law enforcement agencies.
