Suspected drunk driver arrested after alleged shooting incident

Three men were arrested last Friday morning in Liberty after local police say someone opened fire on them. The incident happened at approximately 2:40 a.m. A Liberty police officer saw a swerving vehicle on the road, and — believing the man was drunk — decided to initiate a traffic stop.

However, as the police officer initiated the stop, the car continued along the road until it crashed into a wooded area. Following the car crash, officers say that shots were fired. Police suspect that it was definitely the driver who fired the shots, and possibly some of the other individuals. Authorities are unsure whether the shots were fired in the direction of officers or just in a randomly chosen direction.

Later, police dispatched a K-9 unit and found the suspect hiding in a swamp off the side of a road. In addition, they arrested two more suspects with the assistance of the K-9 unit. The men were between the ages of 18 and 20 and, according to authorities, they had been riding in a stolen vehicle that had recently been involved in a robbery in the Wake County area. Fortunately, no one was injured during the arrest.

Police are still investigating this case before they decide on what charges they will accuse the men of in this case. At the very least, the driver will be accused of DWI; however, these men might also face charges of robbery and charges related to the illegal firing of a firearm during a police traffic stop. Nevertheless, no matter what the charges, these men will have the ability to defend themselves in court through the use of criminal defense attorney.
