Federal Correctional Complex, Butner (FCC Butner)

About the Federal Bureau of Prisons

The Federal Bureau of Prisons is the agency that supervises and manages the entire federal prison system, which includes more than 100 prisons (“institutions”) located throughout the U.S. These prisons generally consist of a mix of security levels:

  • Prison camps (with limited or no fencing)
  • Low/minimum security (many with dormitory housing)
  • Medium security (double-fenced with detection systems)
  • High security (reinforced fences or walls)

The type of prison a convicted individual will be placed in depends on the nature of the federal offense, as well as the facts and circumstances of the case itself, such as the individual’s criminal history.

About Federal Correctional Complex, Butner (FCC Butner)

FCC Butner is located on the county line of Durham County and Granville County, roughly 25 miles north of Raleigh. Roberts Law Group, PLLC is based in Raleigh, North Carolina, which makes FCC Butner one of the closest federal prisons to its offices.

FCC Butner’s prison designation is as a minimum/low security prison (FCI Butner Medium I, FCI Butner Medium II, and FCI Butner Low). The prison houses many individuals who have been convicted of fraud, other types of white collar crime, and public corruption.

Bernie Madoff: Infamous Resident of FCC Butner

The most notorious resident of FCC Butner is a man who now serves a 150-year sentence for masterminding what is apparently one of the largest white collar financial fraud in history — if not the largest of all time — a multi-billion-dollar Ponzi scheme that led to federal charges of securities fraud, mail and wire fraud, money laundering, and perjury, among others. This man is Bernard L. Madoff.

Another federal prison inmate of FCC Butner (though not nearly as infamous as Madoff) is former Congressman Mel Reynolds (who has since been released). Reynolds was charged and convicted of federal offenses that included the sex crimes of solicitation of child pornography and sexual assault, among others.
