Wilmington Police Car - Need a Wilmington Criminal Defense Attorney?

No one hopes to get caught up in North Carolina’s criminal justice system. If Wilmington’s law enforcement is investigating you, or the state has charged you with a crime, you should not leave your fate to chance. Hiring the right criminal defense attorney will play a key role in your future. In addition to providing excellent representation, we believe in educating our clients so that they can make wise decisions. Read on to learn how to search for and hire the best defense attorney for you.

What To Expect When Hiring A Criminal Defense Lawyer

You may not even know what to expect when hiring a criminal defense lawyer. The process is intimidating, at first — but it is of utmost importance. Taking the time to find the attorney who is best for you, and the specific charges you’re facing, will go a long way toward helping your criminal case.

What Does A Defense Attorney Do?

In Wilmington and elsewhere, criminal defense attorneys represent people accused of crimes or under investigation for criminal activity. They help you communicate with police and the court system, handle administrative legal tasks and ensure that your rights are upheld. If you are interested in accepting a plea bargain, your lawyer will negotiate an arrangement with the prosecution at the  pre-trial conference. If you wish to proceed to trial, your lawyer will represent you in court.

What To Expect At Your First Meeting

In your initial consultation with a law firm, you will meet one or more of the firm’s attorneys. You will discuss your case in detail. Be honest: the more your team knows about your case, the better. They need this information to prepare a strong defense.

This is also a good chance to ask any questions that you have about the criminal charges against you, the legal process and the outcome of your case. When you have found representation that you trust, your legal team will begin strategizing your defense.

Paying For A Criminal Defense Law Firm

The state of North Carolina will provide a court-appointed lawyer if you cannot afford a private attorney. Court-appointed attorneys are free, but they cannot always provide the best representation possible because of their heavy caseloads. Private attorneys frequently offer flexible payment options to their clients; for example, negotiable retainer fees and repayment installments. Ultimately, you should not let prices dictate the quality of your representation.

How To Choose A Criminal Defense Lawyer

Thinking of the daunting task ahead of you — hiring the law firm that will represent you in your criminal case — may seem overwhelming. However, when you know what to look for, this task becomes much simpler.

Rather than feeling intimidated, feel empowered: this is your chance to select a team to stand alongside you during the legal proceedings.

At Roberts Law Group, PLLC, we believe in helping our clients find the legal representation that best suits them. So, what criteria should you look for when hiring a defense attorney? If you do not know what to look for, then you will not know how to choose a good criminal defense lawyer. The key characteristics you should consider when finding an attorney include:

  • Education
  • Reputation
  • Successful case results
  • Accolades

As one of North Carolina’s premier criminal defense law firms, Roberts Law Group, PLLC, has these qualities. Our attributes speak for themselves:

  • Education: Our founding attorney graduated from Duke Law School, one of the top-10 law schools in the nation. He also attended the prestigious Trial Lawyers College and the National Criminal Defense College. Wilmington attorney Kevin Marcilliat likewise has a strong educational background as a graduate of both the Campbell University Wiggins School of Law and the White Collar Criminal College.
  • Reputation: During our decade-plus of criminal defense experience, we have earned a strong positive reputation from law enforcement officers, judges, prosecutors and fellow defense attorneys.
  • Successful case results: We have hundreds, if not thousands, of successful outcomes under our belts.* Read about some of our many success stories.
  • Accolades: Attorney Kevin Marcilliat enjoys a 10/10 Avvo rating. He has won the Avvo Clients’ Choice Award for multiple years, been selected for inclusion on the Super Lawyers Rising Stars list and ranks among the Top 100 Trial Lawyers. Read more about his background.

You also have the option of hiring a public defender. You must understand, though, that public defenders don’t have the same level of resources and availability as private law firms. Their plates are full, and they are often stretched thin. If you can in any way afford to do so, hiring a private criminal defense attorney is in your best interest.

*Each case is different and must be evaluated on its individual facts. We work hard to assess each case individually. Prior results do not guarantee any future outcome.
