Aggressive Legal Defense for Federal Criminal Cases

About Me

Federal Criminal Defense Lawyer Patrick Roberts

I am a criminal defense attorney. I help solve problems for my clients and their families, fixing challenging situations under difficult circumstances. My job is to defend people who have been charged with crimes in state and federal courts across North Carolina and throughout the country – and it’s a job I love. After spending several years as a prosecutor, I decided to start my own law firm in 2007, and I’ve been passionately defending the accused ever since.

Each day, every day, I work tirelessly to master my craft and to better serve the people I represent.

My job performance directly affects peoples’ lives and I take pride in that. Success in criminal defense means changing lives by what I do on a daily basis. Solving problems is the work that I am best suited for. In college, I studied Chemical Engineering. It may not sound related, but that’s where I discovered that I love solving problems. In my legal practice, I am solving problems every day for people, hunting for the best possible outcome based on all the facts and evidence at hand. I am passionate about this work and wouldn’t trade it for anything else.

I focus on defending people who have been charged – not yet convicted – with a federal offense in North Carolina. Federal defense attorneys are generally in the best position to help people who are under investigation or have been arrested and charged, not those who are already serving time for a conviction. For that reason, I do not accept cases involving post-conviction relief.

A Criminal Defense Lawyer Who Is Truly Dedicated to His Craft

What is your view of your role as a lawyer?

Treat people with respect. You never know who might have an impact on the case. Being an “aggressive” criminal defense lawyer is much more than looking to negotiate a quick plea and making big claims about past results (even if those claims are true). I believe I can help people in need and deliver quality legal service to clients. There’s nothing special about me just because I’m a lawyer. My job is to help and serve people. Period.

What do you mean by working to master your craft?

To master my craft means sacrificing lots of time and energy to be the best I can be. I went to both the Gerry Spence Trial Lawyers College and the National Criminal Defense College. This was on top of law school at Duke University. These are selective, rigorous programs, with some of the best trial lawyers in the country. The total number of graduates from both programs is a very small number. I’ll let that speak for itself.

Patrick Roberts is an absolutely outstanding attorney.” – D.J.L. (former client)

What makes you qualified to help people?

I have handled thousands of cases. I have fought for dismissals, negotiated plea bargains, argued for the reduction of felony charges to misdemeanors, won acquittals at trial, and succeeded in criminal appeals.

I’ve defended people in North Carolina since leaving the Wake County District Attorney’s Office in 2007. I am a former prosecutor for Wake, New Hanover, and Johnston Counties.

And while prior results and awards don’t guarantee future outcomes, they’re a good indicator of my qualifications. I have a 5.0/5.0 rating from prior clients on Lawyers.com and have been recognized as a Super Lawyers Rising Star and a Top Attorney on Avvo.com. I am also listed in Top 100 North Carolina Trial Attorneys and Top 40 North Carolina Attorneys Under 40.

Most recently, I was appointed by North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory to serve on his Crime Commission, Juvenile Justice Planning Committee, working to help ensure fair treatment and justice for North Carolina’s children and teens.

‘Cared for as a Person and a Dear Friend’

“For my first experience with jail, I am very pleased to have had such excellent representation. I was very happy to have someone in my corner that made me truly feel as if I was cared for as a person and a dear friend.” – Former client (facing federal child pornography charges)

Do not wait to call an attorney. The federal government can destroy peoples’ lives. I care about stopping it, or at least minimizing the damage. That’s why you should hire legal representation now. The absolute best time to do so, in most cases, is when you discover you’re under investigation or facing likely charges.
