The defense team offered a guilty plea in exchange for life without parole for the infamous Colorado theater gunman. But, prosecutors declined the offer and have publicly announced that they will seek the death penalty as punishment for the man who killed 12 people and injured 70 while they watched a late-night showing of a Batman film.
Charged with killing a homeless man in Raleigh, at least four area teens may be tried as adults for the crime. The Wake County Prosecutor has confirmed that may seek a transfer of some of the teens involved in the death of 37-year-old Regynald Brown to adult court.
The highest court in North Carolina ruled that the Council of the State has the right and the authority to guide the execution process for inmates on death row. The North Carolina Supreme Court found in favor of the Council in a suit brought by death row inmates who alleged that their criminal defense rights were infringed up on by allowing the Council to set the execution protocol.
Troy Davis was executed in Georgia on Wednesday, September 21, despite huge protests and criminal justice appeals. Davis was convicted in 1991 of killing a police officer who was on security patrol. Many people critical of the death penalty used the Davis case as an example of what is wrong with the U.S. criminal defense and criminal justice system.
