In 2007, Kimberly Watkins of Fayetteville was convicted on several charges of child sex crimes. She was recently arrested for having a Facebook account, a violation of a 2008 North Carolina law that prohibits registered sex offenders from using the majority of online social media sites.

Sex Offenders Are Expected to Challenge Law Against Social Networking Site Use

Several men charged with violating a North Carolina law that prohibits sex offenders from using social networking sites are expected to appeal their conviction under the statute. While the law was signed into effect in 2008, only 18 were charged under the law in 2009 and 75 were charged in 2010.

Sex Offender Accused of Social Networking Pleads Guilty

A Durham County registered sex offender pleaded guilty to using a social networking website this month. The former North Carolina Central University student was sentenced to three to four months for accessing restricted social networking websites.

No Social Networking for Sex Offenders

A Carteret County registered sex offender is charged with having a social networking site. A citizen notified the Carteret County Sheriff's Office that Newport resident Timothy Howard Newman, 35, had an online profile on Facebook, the popular social networking site.
